Finally Catching Up On 1000+ Unread Posts

It’s a seriously daunting task whenever I “forget” to check in on my Google Reader for awhile and then go back and see some of the numbers next to my unread count amounting to large numbers. Like for instance, the 1000+ posts from Mashable that I haven’t read in my Google Reader (though I follow them on Facebook, so catch some of the posts while I’m checking that). And after every time that I spend some time away from the computer, I spend a lot of time catching up on everything… It takes a few days, but once it’s done, I find it rejuvenating and inspiring.

Let’s take a walk through some of the awesome posts I’ve missed in my absence:

  • From my Blogging & Social Media Folder

The following posts are from some of my favorite blogs about Blogging, Social Media and Tech:

    • It’s Possible To Post To Facebook From The Afterlife
Author: Justin Lafferty | Source: AllFacebook.com

This kind of thing has been on mind a lot lately. I don’t want to just die and have nothing ever said to the one’s I really care about. I think being able to do it on Facebook is awesome, because who doesn’t use Facebook? However, I also think that it’s impersonal and a little creepy. I don’t want to go onto Facebook to constantly be reminded of my dead friends…

    • INFOGRAPHIC: Ways to Get More Shares on Facebook
Author: Justin Lafferty | Source: AllFacebook.com

I’m always a huge fan of infographics. I’m not sure what it is about them that I love so much, I just know that I really like getting my information in infographic form. This one offers up a couple of ways to get more shares on Facebook including posting at particular times of day and more frequently as well as using your authentic voice and captivating images. Good tips!

    • Why Google Glass Could Be Bad For Your Eyes
Author: Samantha Murphy | Source: Mashable

I think, even if Google Glass was bad for my eyes, I’d probably still want a pair…

    • Google Glass May Arrive for Consumers by End of Year
Author: Emily Price | Source: Mashable

Say what?!? By the end of the year?!? And really, considering what these things are supposed to be able to do, $1500 isn’t that outrageous. I want it!!

    • 10 Awesome Things That Happened At The Star Trek Reunion
Author: AshleyRose Sullivan | Source: Mashable

With all my recent musings about Star Trek, it’s no wonder that this is added to my list. I’ve kind of become really obsessed and have more than once searched the internet for both Brent Spiner (my most favorite character on the show) and Patrick Stewart (because how can you not love Jean-Luc Picard?!?). They all sound like an epic crew!

  • From My Favorites Folder

The following posts are from bloggers who I can consider to be people I look up to and are typically bloggers that I’ve been following for years:

    • I’m Online
      Author: lunaKM | Source: lunaKM

One thing that I love about the way that lunaKM writes is how she pulls you into her situation. While you may not be experiencing popularity from your blog, you can understand what she’s going through and how she’s talking about it. I love being pulled into her world!

    • Sex Addiction – Dr Jenn & Dr. Neil Cannon
Author: Dr. Jenn | Source: Dr. Jenn’s Den

In this episode of In The Den with Dr. Jenn, there is short discussion about sex addiction and the issues with labeling someone as a sex addict and how to deal with it if you feel you have it. I’ve often been curious about sex addiction and think that I would make a great sex therapist specializing in this matter.

    • The Hubba-Hubba Girl: Evelyn West, double bill
Author: Gloria | Source: Gloria’s Oversexed Mind

I absolutely loved the video in this post. It’s cute how she tells you where she got her clothes as she’s taking them off. I don’t where Gloria finds this stuff, but it’s pretty freaking spectacular. I’m sharing tons of her stuff over on the Lifestyle Bloggers Anonymous Tumblr blog!

    • Butt Bongo, the hipster version
Author: Gloria | Source: Gloria’s Oversexed Mind

Okay, this one is so good that I’m just reposting the entire video! You all know that I’m a fan of hand-drumming, based on my post This Should Be a Viral Video… IMHO, but this one is so so so so so much better than that! Now I just need to decide if I want to be the drummer or the drum…

I’ll leave it on that note, though there are a couple other really great posts, like this one from Submissive guide about boot-blacking or this one about prostate massage from a contributor to SexIs. There’s just too much good stuff to read! What’s your favorite post and why?

9 Steps Make Me a Candidate for The Worst Blogger on the Planet…

The other day, I was reading through my Google Reader when I ran across a post from Problogger by Karol K of  ThemeFuse titled “13 Steps to Being the Worst Blogger on the Planet”.

I was automatically intrigued and wanted to see if I was, in fact, the worst blogger on the planet. Well, guess what folks? I’m only 4 steps away, and I feel like I should go to a meeting or something…

I have, on multiple occasions (sometimes at every posting), taken some of these steps. And because I’m apparently a sucker for showing off my weaknesses, I’ll re-count all my worst offenses.

**Disclaimer: This is pure entertainment 😉

Step 1: Do no research before writing a post

Check!

Well, I guess I did a little research before writing this post. But for a typical post here on The Rantings, I don’t research much at all. I can name every single post that I ever did research for, and that equals two posts. It’s something that I like doing, so I’m not sure why I don’t do it.

Step 2: Don’t spend longer than 30 seconds on a headline

Check, Check!

I don’t remember the last time I put any serious effort or thought into a headline. My favorite part of this and a suggestion I follow dilligently, “Be honest and make it clear from the get go that there’s nothing interesting in your posts”.  That describes my headlines in a nutshell.

Step 4: Use long paragraphs

Check, Check, Check!

I am the worst for doing this and I always tell myself not to, and then just go right on ahead doing it. When I read this step, I instantly blamed it on my highschool English teachers and every music teacher I ever had. These were the two subjects that I was the best at in school, but the one thing that I could never remember is that a comma that appears in musical lyrics is not the comma that appears in a sentence within a paragraph. So now, I write a comma where I would typically take a breath, should I be speaking my posts to you. It’s a hard habit to break and results in a lot of long paragraphs that seem to run ass end into the other…

Step 5: Write as if you were writing to yourself

I suppose I delve into this one every once and awhile. More like I’m writing in a journal than writing to an audience – assuming I have an audience (shout out to those of you I know about!!).

Step 7: Don’t Edit

I almost never edit my posts initially. I often write in a very spur of the moment kind of way (refer to Step 9), so when it comes to the point where I should be editing, I just hit publish instead. I also find that if I edit right off the bat, I won’t actually publish anything, because my self-criticism gets in my way. And that is definitely not what this blog is for.

I do however, tend to return to posts at a later date and will make any spelling corrections or grammatical errors that I notice, and I even go back and update links every once and awhile!

Step 8: Don’t even profreed

CHECK!!

I just discovered awhile ago that I had been spelling definitely wrong for YEARS!! I have long ignored the squiggly red lines that appear under misspelled words. When I first started using computers on a regular basis (when we first got one in our house!), I was obsessed with making up diseases for all my dolls, so naturally, my computer became the way for me to make medical records for my dolls. But this created a lot of problems where proofreading is concerned, because all of my dolls had the weirdest names and their diseases were even weirder…

Same with fictional stories. Put in the names of the people, and every couple of sentences, you’ve got a red squiggly line. Eventually, when you’re doing spell check, you just start accidentally skipping over misspelled words because you don’t notice it popping up after 50 times of having the person’s name pop up as wrong. And yes, I know you can fix that by adding these names so they don’t appear, but seriously?!?

I also generally tend to think I’m a really great speller. I even won awards for it in school!

Step 9: Post as irregularly as possible

I just have to quote something for you real quick:

“One day, publish two posts one after another; then wait a full two weeks before publishing another post.

Then wait one more month and write a post in which you explain why you’ve been gone, thinking that anyone even noticed. And don’t forget to promise that you’ll be posting more often now.”

Now I ask you, how many times have I done this?!? I even find myself getting tired of it. Awhile back, I had done NaBloPoMo, and posted everyday for a month successfully. It was difficult and exhilarating and I felt more creative than I had in a really long time. So I vowed to carry it on throughout the whole year. 4 days later, that was out the window. Last year, part of my resolutions was to blog everyday for a month again. Not only did I get a late start to the month, but I quit after a short period of time.

This year, it’s the same old story. I want this to change so badly, because I feel better when I’m writing everyday or at least more regularly. It seems to be the hardest thing in the world for me. Even when I schedule time into a calendar for it, it just doesn’t happen…

Step 12: Don’t tell anyone about your blog

Now it’s not really that I’m not telling anyone about my blog, it’s just that I’m not telling the right people. Well, more like I don’t know any of the right people. I’ve told my family about it, and the people I work with (though most of them aren’t even sure what a blog is, so I don’t know why I expect them to be able to find it), but outside of that, I don’t know many people to tell about it. It doesn’t come up in the real world that often.

Online networking, so I can tell online personalities about my blog, is a goal of mine, but something that I’m treading extremely delicately with. I’m a very awkward socializer…

Step 14: Get the count of your list posts wrong

I just did this the other day on Lifestyle Bloggers Anonymous. It took two days before I realized that I had made the mistake and changed it. Thank goodness you can edit posts after you publish them, even if it does make you look a little less credible for those who have caught on… The good news is that I try my best to correct it, so I guess that gives me a little bit of a boost.

So there you go, I am admitting that I am at least partially the worst blogger on the planet. So far, I’m okay with it, and maybe one day I won’t fit into this category at all. I thought this post was hilarious and definitely think you should check it out (and let me know that I’m not alone in the worst blogger on the planet category *smiles*). Thanks for reading!

I Fell In Love… Again!!

Image representing Google Reader as depicted i...

Image via CrunchBase

I always love when I get “in the mood” to read my Google Reader. I actually have two Google accounts now. One that is mostly blogging and social media related stuff and the other which is more of my kinky-related stuff. Think Lifestyle Bloggers Anonymous related

I’ve kind of been ignoring the first one the last couple of weeks, partially because I really need to clean it up so that I’m more interested in checking it all out and partially because I’m so focused on expanding LBA that I haven’t really been paying attention to much except for trying to build that out by making connections with other adult bloggers, which means tons of blog discovering and reading!

So I thought, since I found a couple of really awesome posts, that I’d share some of what I’m coming across and loving. Enjoy!

Great Posts

I’ve also started checking out a few more blogs. I’ve subscribed to a few and put them in my special Blogs to Review folder, meaning that I haven’t decided if I’m going to continue following them or not. When I do decide, they’re getting put in the Blogs I Read folder!
I just recently downloaded a Chrome Extension that lets me un-truncate feeds in my Google Reader, which makes me really happy, because for some reason the blogs that I’m most interested in are always sporting the shortened feed posts and I’m not one to enjoy having to leave the current page that I’m on. I often have so many tabs open that opening up another one is too daunting, so I don’t do it… Anyways…

Blogs I’m Checking Out

  • SexIs

Eden’s Fantasy is not only a great place for buying sex toys, lingerie and more, they also bring you some of the hottest sex news (including an article about a Tennessee highway getting closed due to the spillage of some Bull Semen) and some great series like Secrets of a  Sex Writer by Rachel Kramer Bussel.
  • Graydancer

Graydancer is a sex-educator, erotic author, sex-positive activist and crazy awesome rope bondage enthusiast.
  • Domestic Servitude

If you are interested in domestic servitude, this is definitely the blog for you. They offer a variety of household tips, tons of great links, crafts and other little tidbits for you to enjoy.
  • Diary of  a Kinky Librarian

Nadia West is a self-identified slut, pervert, polyamorist, bisexual, submissive, feminist librarian. She’s a thirtysomething living in an undisclosed part of the NYC area. Nadia loves to talk about sex and her adventures with her Dom, MasterDoc, and thus this blog.
  • Making Latex Clothing

If you’ve ever had an interest in making your own latex clothing, but weren’t sure how or even where to start, this is by far one of the best blogs I’ve ever found about the subject. Great tutorials, awesome projects and guaranteed to make you want to start crafting your own latex apparel!
I’ve also been kind of ignoring my own Twitter account and have been focusing a lot more on @LBAnonymous. It’s been good so far because I’m finding a lot of people that I’m really loving to follow. Check out some of the people I’m following on Twitter:

This Week I…

Got these things done:

  • Finally put in an application for Carter’s birth certificate so that I can get child tax benefit for him. Don’t ask why it took me so long…
  • Went down 5 pounds and 3 inches and then gained it all back…
  • Tracked my hours of sleep everyday on sparkpeople.com
  • Took in my TD1 form to work so that I can begin working full-time hours and get a raise (even though I seriously don’t think I need one, full-time is good enough for me!)
  • Started another blog… I know, it’s a horrible addiction. I keep creating and deleting and then creating some more… Ugh! This one has been really great so far though. It’s a blog giving you the latest and greatest from the social networking community I run, Lifestyle Bloggers Anonymous. My post about how my number one rule when it comes to penis size also applies to social media has proven to be rather popular…
  • I’ve figured out the themes for the next year for the Blog Readers Club on Lifestyle Bloggers Anonymous, though suggestions are always welcome!

Need to Get These Things Done:

  • Take in the daycare papers so that Mom can get paid for all the hard work she’s doing babysitting my brats
  • Hopefully Carter’s birth certificate will arrive and then we can get the other papers filled out
  • Exercise at least 10 minutes a day, and preferably something with a little bit of cardio
  • Get the bathroom clean… Seriously why is this one so hard for me? I used to love to clean bathrooms and now my bathroom just sucks…
  • Get some groceries. We’ve been so hurting for money that groceries have been slim picking and again thank you to my Mom for feeding the kids lots while they’re at her house, so that they’re not as hungry when they get home. Just got to make it until Friday…
  • Get a security clearance from the cop shop…
  • Take library books (that I didn’t finish) and a movie (that is overdue) back to the library…
  • Add more quotes/videos/links to Valerie Rayne’s Randomness

Want To:

  • Go to Mom’s and try to record at least one song to throw up on YouTube, it’s been WAY too freaking long
  • Get through all 450 of my unread items in my Google Reader (add another 100 for everyday that I don’t read it…)
  • Drink more water… I know this should be a NEED TO DO, but I’m a stubborn person, so this is more of a want situation – that way if I don’t get it done, I won’t feel bad, sorta…
  • Clean behind and under the furniture, the pieces I can move anyways. It’s about that time again and normally I let things go a little past their due date when it comes to cleaning. I’d like to get underneath of the computer desk, under the chair and behind the couch all cleaned out…
  • Get 10 more visitors to this blog than I did this time last year, so don’t hesitate to share this blog with your friends by sharing the link —> https://valerieraynerants.wordpress.com/

Conversation Starters

  • So what did you accomplish this week?
  • What are you hoping to get done the rest of the week?
  • Is there anything you’re not looking forward to this week?

You’re Gonna Miss Me…

So, I finally got around to reading my Google Reader, which I hadn’t done in a few days. I’ve got to stop waiting so long for two reasons. One because then they pile up like crazy. Today, I had 498 unread items waiting for me and only got through 200 of them before my internet froze up. Second, because I miss some really great things!

Mashable, one of the many blogs I follow, posted a really great video that I’d love to share with you, because not only do I love that the girl is using a plastic cup as her drum, this girl has a truly amazing voice. And just below that you can hear the original of the song.

I just seriously think this song is so pretty. I’m really glad that I got to hear it. Now here is the actual version by Lulu and the Lampshades.

Which version do you like better? I personally prefer the cover more than the original, mainly because you can hear the lyrics better and the cup is done more cleanly. It’s just a really pretty song. Super thumbs up to Lulu and the Lampshades!

Loving Google!!!

Okay, I know I’ve said it about a million times and all the people who aren’t in it, probably won”t get it, but Google is the best ever!!!

So this morning, as always, I check my Google Reader (+1 for Google!!), then I run across this post about a Gameboy Music Video. In the description, they talk about Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” on a Gameboy, so curiosity makes the cat happy, so I followed the link.

Next thing you know, I’m watching this internet meme of two of the BEST musicians on YouTube (+2 for Google). The next half hour is spent watching some of the best YouTube videos I’ve ever seen.

Here’s the story:

Jake says to Kurt, you can’t play any real songs on the recorder. With drumpad and recorder in hand, Kurt proves Jake wrong by playing Justin Bieber’s “Baby” and then challenges Jake to do better.

The next few videos take them through the challenge as more and more instrument types are introduced including a CROCKenspiel, a cellphone, a Zither and the final video of the Sqeakaphone.

After the final video, the two guys get together, Jake on guitar and Kurt on his drumpad, and bang out some amazing music!! While watching the challenge, you think, “Yeah, these guys are great musicians because of their ear and innovation”, but you definitely don’t expect what you hear!

Below is the video that started the whole challenge. From within the video, you can click on the links at the end of the video to take you to the challenge response, or you can scroll down to see the links to all the videos including the one where they get together.

So readers, what do you think of this internet meme? What songs would you like to hear and what types of creative instruments can you think of or have you played?

The Entire Meme:

  1. Kurt vs. Jake:“Baby”… on RECORDER?!?!
  2. Jake vs. Kurt:“Telephone”… on GLOCKENSPIEL?!?!
  3. Kurt vs. Jake:“Moonlight Sonata”… on CROCKenspiel?!?
  4. Jake vs. Kurt:“Beat It”… on GAMEBOY?!?!
  5. Kurt vs. Jake: “Zelda’s Lullaby”… on OCARINA?!?!
  6. Jake vs. Kurt: “Only Girl (In the World)”… on ZITHER?!?!
  7. Kurt vs. Jake: “Pachelbel’s Canon”… on CELL PHONE?!?!
  8. Jake vs. Kurt: “Bad Romance”… on SQUEAKAPHONE?!?!
  9. When They Get TogetherJake and Kurt: Cover of Nelly’s “Just a Dream”

Leave your comments and let me know which one is your favorite!
